RETROSPECTIVE

FORM AND METHOD

FORM AND METHOD

Ever since I was a child, language has fascinated me. Its nuance, its ability to build worlds, as well as tear them down, the power to make people feel invincible, as well as the power to make them feel vulnerable. I had always seen words and letters as the way by which we convey meaning, rather than seeing the words and letters as compelling, but this changed dramatically while studying creative writing at university.

Having being exposed to experimental and innovative writers, such as members of Oulipo, and concrete poets, such as the Noigandres, my appreciation for language broadened to include its aesthetic character. So began my love affair with the visuality of language.

During my studies, I discovered pattern, concrete, and display poetry. These forms broke down all my assumptions regarding poetry and language as a whole. I decided that I didn't wish to just find the boundaries, I wished to tear them down entirely. It was liberating to find a form which had a long tradition but also remained relevant and contemporary.

I produce my work digitally, using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I love the flexibility and the huge scope available.

BEYOND WRITING

BEYOND WRITING

When I'm not writing short stories or composing visual poetry, I can be found making dungeons for adventurers to explore, as I'm an avid pen-and-paper role-player. In addition to writing, and roleplaying, I also produce dance music (I'm a big jungle and drum and bass head). The other main love is spending time with my beautiful wife. We enjoy exploring the north-east and relaxing together where possible.
